Management

Donal Byrne – CEO

Donal Byrne – CEO

Donal Byrne is leading Corvil’s innovation in mathematical and algorithmic-based solutions for ultra-low latency monitoring and management, and optimization of high frequency electronic trading and market data consumption in the capital markets. Donal joined Corvil in 2000 as non-executive chairman and became CEO in 2002, with a mission to build a successful, multinational software company catering to the global financial services sector.

Donal has over twenty years of experience in computer systems, networking and telecommunications. In 2004, Donal was selected by the World Economic Forum as a Technology Pioneer for his work with Corvil. In 2005, he was named in the Top 10 Emerging Technology Companies in the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year. Prior to Corvil, Donal was a founding management team member of FirstMark Communications, an alternate broadband service provider in Europe, and served as senior vice president and chief marketing officer.

From 1993 to 1999, he worked in Silicon Valley. In 1996, Donal co-founded Berkeley Networks which was acquired in 1998 by Fore Systems, a leader in Internet switching platforms. He was senior vice president of marketing at Fore Systems until the company was acquired a year later by GEC. Between 1993 and 1996, he was director of architecture and product management at Bay Networks (formerly Synoptics and Wellfleet), responsible for development of next-generation routers. Donal joined Synoptics from Digital Equipment Corporation in Boston, where he led hardware and software engineering development on a wide range of data switching and Internet routing products. Earlier in his career, Donal worked in France Telecom’s research laboratories (CNET, Lannion), focusing on high-speed optical transmission and telecommunications systems.

Donal holds a B.E. and M.Eng.Sc. degrees from University College, Dublin. He is a frequent speaker at industry conferences and events, and has numerous publications and patents in the field of network communications.

Raymond Russell – CTO & Co-Founder

Raymond Russell – CTO & Co-Founder

Raymond is a founder of Corvil and co-inventor of its core technology. He started his career as a research assistant under Prof. John Lewis in the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS). There he worked with John and Fergal Toomey (Principal Scientist with Corvil) in pioneering the measurement of the Large Deviation properties of packet-switched network traffic.

In 1997, Raymond completed his Ph.D. thesis on the transformation of stochastic processes under random time-changes, and took up a part-time Assistant Professorship in DIAS. He used the rest of his time to work with Lewis and Toomey on the foundations of Corvil, which he joined full-time in 2000. He used a central result of his thesis to apply the original form of the technology to IP networks.

Since 2000, Raymond has played an instrumental role in building a strong company and product suite around the core Corvil technology, covering many areas such as network science, product management, technical sales, and field engineering.

As Chief Technology Officer, Raymond is focused on driving continued advancement and fulfillment of Corvil’s innovations with a focus on applications and infrastructure in capital market. Recently, Raymond has led intensive investigations into latency issues impacting proprietary trading firm applications and utilized this experience to improve Corvil’s product offering.

Fergal Toomey - Chief Scientist & Co-Founder

Fergal Toomey - Chief Scientist & Co-Founder

Fergal is one of Corvil’s founders and a specialist in bandwidth and QoS measurement technologies. He has been involved in the design and development of innovative traffic measurement and analysis algorithms for the past 12 years. Prior to joining Corvil in 2000, Fergal held the position of assistant professor in the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies, where he was a member of Prof. John T. Lewis’ applied probability group which also included Raymond Russell, Corvil’s Chief Technology Officer.

At DIAS, Fergal worked on applications ranging from probability theory and game theory to performance modeling and analysis for networks and real-time computing systems. He has published technical papers on subjects including real-time QoS-aware measurement of network traffic and performance analysis of network queuing and scheduling models.

At Corvil, Fergal has been intensively involved in developing key product innovations directly applicable to managing latency in capital markets. Recently he has been involved in applying these innovations in the capital markets sector to help our customers realize the full capabilities of the product.

Fergal holds an M.Sc. in Physics and a Ph.D. in Applied Probability Theory, both from Trinity College, Dublin

James Henry, VP Engineering & Operations

James Henry, VP Engineering & Operations

James joined Corvil in March 2004 as Director of Customer Advocacy with responsibility for the global delivery of Technical Support, Customer Services, Project Management and Training. In May 2005, James was promoted to VP Engineering with responsibility for product delivery. In February 2007, his role was expanded to include Operations with responsibility for Professional Services, Technical Support, Training and Fulfilment.

James brings extensive Management, Project Management, Information Systems and Software Engineering experience to Corvil having held a variety of senior positions at a pan-European and International level. Prior to Corvil, James was VP for Worldwide Services at Adobe Systems in San Jose responsible for service delivery on desktop products and enterprise solutions. From 1999, James was Managing Director of JetForm in Dublin responsible for delivery of Business Process Automation solutions to customers in the Financial and Government sectors across Europe. In 2001, he took up the position of CIO at JetForm based in Canada. Prior to this, James held a number of consulting and software engineering positions including Practice Manager at ICL/Fujitsu, where he managed large scale Data Warehouse and ERP developments and deployments.

James holds a Masters in Business Administration from University College Dublin.

Donal O'Sullivan, VP Product Management

Donal has over 15 years experience developing and creating products in the high performance network and infrastructure management space. He joined Corvil in June 2001, and was appointed to head up product management in June 2006. Donal works closely with Corvil’s customers to achieve their low-latency objectives and maximise the performance of their trading and market data infrastructure. His team collaborates with customers and prospects, the sales and development teams, and industry analysts to ensure the Corvil product is aligned with customer requirements today while maintaining its strong reputation for technical innovation.

He previously worked in Euristix/Marconi in a technical management role, where he spent several years in San Jose developing and delivering infrastructure management projects to some of the largest global equipment vendors.  Donal is named co-inventor on several Corvil patents.

Donal holds a degree in Electronic Engineering from the University of Limerick.

Sandra Bowen, Finance Director

Sandra Bowen, Finance Director

Sandra has focused her professional career in the software industry, holding senior financial roles including responsibility for legal and human resources. Prior to joining Corvil, Sandra held the position of finance director at TIBCO Inc, with roles in both EMEA and the U.S.. Before then she was vice president of finance at ObjectStar, as well as head of finance at Cognotec, both with worldwide responsibilities.

Sandra has degrees in business studies from Trinity College, Dublin and in Irish law from Griffith College, Dublin. She is trained as a chartered accountant with PWC in Ireland and Bermuda, qualifying in 1991.

Ronald P. Holland, Vice President, North American Sales

Ronald P. Holland, Vice President, North American Sales

Ronald’s career experience and achievements in institutional securities and investments, focuses on developing client-centric sales and business development teams that achieve significant revenue generation and organizational impact. Over the course of his career, Ronald has also been involved in business development efforts from ground-up to commercial success.

Prior to joining Corvil, Ronald was executive director in Morgan Stanley’s ModelWare business unit and a key member of the group’s management team. At Morgan Stanley, he also served as a founding board member of TheMarkets.com (TMC) and acting Co-COO for the first year of that business. TMC is consortium co-founded by Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, Merrill Lynch and Citigroup to alter the commercial value of sell-side research and reverse the client/content disintermediation facilitated by vendors. Earlier, he led U.S. sales for Morgan Stanley’s Passport and FIX connectivity products to hedge funds and asset managers.

Before Morgan Stanley, Ronald was a senior sales manager at Bloomberg LP., responsible for sales, product and business development of integrated electronic trading and risk management systems.
