Interactive Data Taps Corvil for Latency Monitoring

Interactive Data Taps Corvil for Latency Monitoring

Interactive Data is deploying technology from Dublin-based latency management systems vendor Corvil across its global data acquisition and distribution infrastructure to monitor and manage data latency over the networks used to support its PlusFeed consolidated feed and low-latency 7Ticks trading infrastructure services.

The vendors began a proof of concept project around a year ago when 7Ticks - which Interactive Data acquired last year (IMD, Dec. 21, 2009) - deployed Corvil technology to monitor its network latency in the US. The new deal expands that deployment globally by rolling out CorvilNet appliances to more than 20 datacenters in the US, Europe and Asia-Pacific.

Once the rollout is complete, which is expected by year-end, data collected from each monitoring appliance will be aggregated and displayed via a centralized user interface, giving Interactive Data “a unified view across their entire infrastructure via a centralized monitoring center, or centers,” says Donal O’Sullivan, vice president of product development at Corvil.

Interactive Data’s infrastructure support technicians will use the Corvil technology to monitor and manage data traffic, latency and quality across its global network - which carries datafeeds from hundreds of exchanges and other real-time sources, and distributes that data to customer sites - though separate business lines in the vendor’s Real-Time division will use different aspects of the technology.

“Within Interactive Data, the focus for our 7ticks network is on managing latency, while sequence gap analysis and ensuring market data quality is the focus for PlusFeed. Corvil allows us to perform both functions using the same technology,” says Scott Caudell, senior vice president of global architecture for Interactive Data’s 7Ticks business.

Whereas 7Ticks monitors latency from its network operations center in Chicago, Interactive Data uses a “follow-the-sun” support model with offices in New York, the UK and Australia monitoring its global real-time infrastructure, Caudell says.

Once the global network monitoring technology is deployed, Interactive Data will also be able to expand the scope of the deployment to monitor the performance of applications, such as feed handlers and ticker plants. “Initially this is for monitoring network performance and market data quality, but as we roll it out, we have the potential to scale that up for application visibility as well,” O’Sullivan says.
