In my previous role, working in presales for a real-time monitoring company operating exclusively in the banking area, I had heard of Corvil, not least because I was working in the finance sector where leveraging technology to reduce risk has always been a hot topic. Even then I knew that network packet data holds a truth that you can’t get anywhere else.
Working with application and server data addresses a particular type of problem very effectively – you can see what happens in the box, but not what happens between the boxes. Corvil, by contrast, works on the wire non-intrusively providing a single source of truth.
I knew all this before I joined Corvil. What I discovered in my first four weeks after starting earlier this year was how sophisticated the existing solutions are and how a newer product, Intelligence Hub, is taking monitoring and analytics to a whole new level.
I joined the London office and it was full on from day one. I was straight into the Corvil Certified Administrator (CCA) course. After 16 hours of self-paced training over several days, I was qualified to start working on the product. I also got to shadow my more experienced colleagues and began to get afeel for real world implementations. There was also a first opportunity to meet with customers, on premise and over the phone.
Things got more practical in week two as I got to play with Corvil appliances and dashboards. I had the training materials next to me on my desk and got sucked in.
The core values were also introduced – I’ve always been sceptical about company values and thought they were more about marketing than day-to-day reality, but I soon found that Corvil is different.
The company really puts its values into practice – things like ‘Be Honest, Humble and Real’ and the drive to ‘Deliver Amazing’ in our work. The one that struck me most in the first weeks was ‘We before me, always’. Everyone in the office is accessible and always ready to help.
Coincidentally I joined in January, the start of Corvil’s financial year when the main goals for 2019 are shared with employees. No sooner had I finished the technical introduction than I was attending the sales kick-off meeting and getting an understanding of the business.
I also got to meet Donal Byrne, the company CEO, who spotted a new face in the delegation and took time to have a chat. He was very welcoming. This was my first insight into a company culture that is the exact opposite of hierarchical, where everyone is approachable regardless of role.
Next, I started training on Intelligence Hub. I had heard a little about the new product, but to be honest, I was sceptical. There has been a lot of hype about big data platforms and machine learning seemed like just another industry buzzword. I was wary but I needn’t have been. I got a real sense of something innovative and was pleased to experience a living and breathing platform that genuinely brings big data and machine learning together to tackle anomaly detection and, in some cases, predictive analytics..
My background in IT for finance helped me in understanding the product and the paradigm shift Corvil is going through. I got the chance to speak to an Intelligence Hub product manager who was eager to listen about new ideas to improve the product.
I experienced the Corvil Certified Expert (CCE) training - two days classroom training concluded by a half-day exam. There was a lot to learn to achieve Corvil’s highest certification; it was very intense but also invigorating.
I went over to Ireland with five other employees for induction day at the Dublin HQ. There was also a chance to carry on the conversation about Intelligence Hub that had started in London.
The first few weeks were a rollercoaster. It’s very rewarding to be part of a team delivering monitoring and analytics solutions that are unique in correlating infrastructure and business performance. There’s also a sense that the best is yet to come. I am excited to be part of the continued roll-out of Intelligence Hub, a game-changing platform that takes our company to another level by answering more business driven questions. Looking back over the last few weeks, I feel I was lucky and joined Corvil at exactly right time.
